2018 Virginia Design Medalists - David Hill and Andrew Fox
This summer marked Hanbury's 14th year of its Virginia Design Medalist Program and is the first year the firm hosted a landscape architect as one of its Design Medalists. Our 2018 Virginia Design Medalists, Professors David Hill, AIA and Andrew Fox, ASLA, PLA from North Carolina State University College of Design, spent two weeks in Hanbury's Norfolk office participating in a variety of design discussions, critiquing work, delivering keynote lectures and overseeing the research on urban resilience being done by Hanbury's Summer Scholars.
This program provides Hanbury the opportunity to have an academic assessment of its work. In past years, Medalists have brought clarity to design issues and insights from their related research and teaching. In 2017 our Virginia Design Medalist Joe Wheeler, AIA, from Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design shared his research on prefabricated housing components. His ideas informed the firm's strategies on using prefabrication in our student housing work. This year we selected Medalists with deep knowledge of the vulnerability of our coastal regions specifically to help strengthen our firm's grasp of the latest research and methods for resilient design.
In addition to their teaching roles, David and Andrew are Co-Directors of the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab at NCSU. Over the course of their five keynote lectures, the pair examined with us the phenomenon of sea-level rise, the implications of our changing environment, and engaged us in a dialog on our clients' interests in sustainability and campus resiliency.
In exchange, the Design Medalists are invited to step into the world of design practice and influence built projects. Our 2008 Medalist, Judith Kinnard, FAIA, from Tulane University helped the USF School of Music design team crystallize priorities and discover a path to preserving essential elements of the design that were vulnerable to 'value engineering.' David and Andrew similarly left their mark on a Hanbury project where they helped a project team address some requested changes for Seacobeck Hall at University of Mary Washington. Their new perspective provided fresh ideas and contributed to the design solutions for Seacobeck Hall's central forum space.
