Master Plan and Implementation Phase One

Established in 1728, Norfolk Academy has over time unfailingly/steadfastly balanced rigorous fundamentals and innovative teaching strategies, with a series of recent projects reflecting that premise.

Norfolk Academy partnered with Hanbury for a Facilities Master Plan in 2010 that identified academic, athletic and dining expansions and upgrades for the campus over the next 15 to 20 years. Highlighting the Phase One Implementation is a renovation and addition to the Lower School that emphasizes the “STEAM Center” catering to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics while embracing innovation and collaborative learning with a new central multipurpose space, art and music classrooms, a band room and music practice rooms, projecting a prominent new image and dynamic presence for the Lower School.

The new Massey Leadership Center places the Norfolk Academy Fellows Program central to the daily experience for Middle and Upper School students, engaging the Fellows and the student body in a Student Center-like facility. The Leadership Center is complemented by new and renovated spaces for Upper School science and language labs, greenhouse space, and a new college counseling center.

The Refectory, servery, and kitchen have been reconfigured and expanded, and upgrades have been made to the Vaughan Aquatics Center along with a new football stadium, Bell Tower, and Athletic Plaza.

Complementing the football stadium are new artificial turf fields, lighting for night games, and an expanded and resurfaced track. The new masonry stadium includes a mix of seats with a total seating capacity of 873. The stadium includes home and visitor varsity locker rooms with direct field access, concessions, public restrooms, conditioned and unconditioned storage, and a press box. A covered concourse at the top of the stadium allows 'standing room' viewing of the football field as well as of the adjacent varsity soccer fields. Both the stadium complex and the campus fronting Wesleyan Drive are surrounded by a new decorative aluminum fence with brick piers, establishing the campus perimeter while maintaining the Norfolk Academy aesthetic.

The range of new and updated facilities allows Norfolk Academy to nimbly and creatively maintain traditionally high standards, while better equipping students and faculty “to reach their true potential in a world of accelerating change."
